Nancy Llewellyn Thiessen

January 9, 1934 — October 23, 2022

Nancy Llewellyn (Norton) Thiessen, 88, passed away on October 23, 2022.

Nancy was born in Ocala, Florida on January 9, 1934 to Mary (Bryce) and Clyde Haley Norton. Her early childhood was spent in Ocala, at the home of her adored grandfather, Walter Bryce, and at Camp Roosevelt, where her mother was an instructor.  In 1943, she and her parents moved to Ft. Pierce, Florida where she spent her teenage years and was the valedictorian of her high school class.  She graduated from Wesleyan College in Macon, GA in 1955 and then worked as a medical technologist in Atlanta, GA, Dallas, TX, and Fayetteville NC.  In Fayetteville, she met the love of her life, Derek John Thiessen.

Nancy married Derek on May 10, 1963, and they shared nearly 51 years of very happy and love-filled marriage. Derek’s military career took them to Massachusetts, Virginia, Kansas, and Germany before they settled in Laurel, MD, in 1980.  In Laurel, Nancy was an active volunteer and board member of the Friends of Montpelier.

She is survived by their three children - Jennifer Newman (Dennis), John Kenneth Thiessen (Simona Maggini) and Karin Thiessen, and their four granddaughters – Kathleen Stuart (Doug), Julie Newman, Anne Newman, and Rebecca Thiessen.

Nancy was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Her children will remember her unconditional love and the warmth she brought to their lives, her sly wit, the fun she had seasonally decorating their house, her interest in history, and her affection for our many cats.

Nancy will be interred with her beloved husband Derek at Arlington National Cemetery at a date still to be determined.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or your local animal shelter.

Please check back for interment date at Arlington National Cemetery.
