Nick Espinoza

April 5, 1968 — April 2, 2018

John Nikolaus “Nick” Espinoza was born April 5, 1968 in Stuttgart, Germany to Juan Francisco and Katherine Marie Espinoza, where Juan was stationed for the US Army. After returning to the US, Nick was raised in Alexandria, VA, where he attended Hayfield Secondary. Nick built a career as a skilled tradesman. He loved working with his hands and applying his natural creativity to all manner of home and commercial construction projects. He took pride in what he did, and had a natural ability to connect with the people he worked for and with because of his work ethic but mostly because of his kind nature. Nick was always willing to help anyone with any projects that he could, a passion that led to a successful contracting business, and satisfied homeowners all over the DC metro area. Nick’s creative spirit was not limited to work; he saw the world through an artist’s eye. He loved to learn new skills and constantly added to his repertoire. He enjoyed creating art through stained glass and woodwork, and wrote both original songs and poetry. A self-taught guitar player, he had a natural talent that he shared with his daughter, Danielle Hartman, and many others. He was most happy when he was playing guitar, especially with Danielle. A true animal lover, Nick took joy in a household that grew to include  three dogs, Lucy, Buster and Scout, as well as Reilly, the horse. Nick is survived by his wife Katy O’Reilly Espinoza, his daughter Danielle Hartman, a brother, TJ Espinoza, his nieces, Chelsea Brown, Carla Espinoza, Rebecca De Castillo, Emma Shimp, Olivia Shimp, Caroline Shimp, Katherine Olson, Anna Olson, and nephew, Connor Olson, many of whom he patiently taught the guitar. His family mourns a gentle and gifted man, who gave selflessly to anyone he met.
