Phyllis M. (Chaney) Sczuka

September 13, 1922 — September 30, 2021

Phyllis Mae Sczuka, age 99, passed away on September 30, 2021. She was born and raised in Laurel, Maryland and graduated from Laurel High School and attended college. She worked as an Executive Secretary to the owner of The Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C. for many years before she retired. She loved going to casinos and playing bingo.

Phyllis was known as the “Duchess”, she and her late husband  were affectionately referred to as “The Duke and Duchess of Sczuka”. Her favorite pastimes were traveling with their camper, spending time on the water with her late husband and birdwatching. Phyllis and Chester were great Polka Dancers and enjoyed socializing frequently with their friends in earlier years.

She was the daughter of the late Lillian Mae and John Randolph Chaney and beloved wife of the late Chester Sczuka, they shared 32 years of marriage. She was preceded in death also by Thomas Chaney (Elenner), Tommy Chaney, II, Raymond Whitehead (Norma), Pearl Kingsbury (Robert), Phillip Kingsbury, Ethel Arnold (Sam), Diane Hall, Dorthy Perone (Mario), Mario Perone II and Millie Long (Henry), stepson Michael Sczuka and beloved uncles Tommy and Benny.

Phyllis is survived by her niece and caregiver, Randa Chaney Hitchner and her husband Bob Hitchner, Heather Barnett (Eric) and Brandon and Doberman buddy Athena; step-son James Sczuka, James, Jr., Michael, Eric and Mary; nieces and nephews Bruce Kingsbury, Joe Perone, Mike Perone, Becky, Debbie and John and her special friend Sarah Sczuka.

A viewing will be held at her church, St. Matthias Church, 9475 Annapolis Road, Lanham, Maryland on Friday, October 8 from 10 AM to 11 AM when her Funeral Mass will be celebrated. Interment will immediately follow at Ivy Hill Cemetery in Laurel.
