It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Rachel Thomas, who left us on January 27, 2025. Born on July 25, 1966, in Freetown, Sierra Leone, Rachel was the firstborn child of Samuel and Charlotte Thomas. She immigrated to the United States with her family, living in D.C., Oklahoma, Maryland, and briefly in Virginia.
Rachel graduated from high school in 1986 and dedicated over 30 years to the nursing profession. She worked as a home health aide at The Arc of Montgomery and Jubilee, where she found immense pride in supporting disabled adults. Rachel always spoke with great affection for the community she served and the colleagues she considered family.
Her greatest joys in life were her two children, Amadu and Lala, and the fulfillment of her dream to own her home. She worked tirelessly to ensure they had opportunities that were better than those she had growing up. Rachel also loved to travel with her children, taking them on memorable trips to Sierra Leone, Gambia, Ghana, New York, and Florida.
Rachel found great joy in her hobbies, including cooking, gardening, and listening to music. However, her true passion was her faith. A devout Christian who gave her life to Christ at an early age, Rachel could always be found at church, offering praise and gratitude to the Lord for the many blessings she had received.
One of Rachel’s greatest sources of joy in recent years was being a grandmother. For Rachel, becoming a grandmother was like a second chance at parenting, a gift she cherished deeply. She reveled in the joy of nurturing and spending time with her grandchildren, pouring love and wisdom into them as only a grandmother can.
Rachel is predeceased in death by her siblings Dennis, Rosaline, and Desmond. Her parents Samuel and Charlotte. Her children Ahmad and Angel. She is also leaving behind numerous Aunties, Uncles, Nieces and Nephew in the USA and abroad.
Rachel’s legacy will live on in the hearts of her children, grandchildren, family, friends, and the many lives she touched throughout her career and faith journey. She will be deeply missed for her warmth, her loving spirit, and her dedication to family, faith, and community. May she rest in peace.
