Richard Neal Harmon

June 4, 1940 — December 30, 2011

Richard N. Harmon,71, died on December 30, 2011 at Gilchrist Hospice Center in Columbia. He was born on June 4, 1940 to the late Robert and Miriam Harmon in Laurel, MD and moved to Jessup in September 1976 where he resided. He graduated from Laurel High School in 1959 and attended American University for 2 years. He served in the National Guard from 1962-1968. Throughout his life, Richard had several careers. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Bowie, Police Officer for Laurel, he started his own Dog Grooming, Pet Retail Store, and Boarding Kennel called Richard's Pet Services. He also had several interests including his love for animals, especially dogs, gardening, cooking, and home improvements including carpeting. Richard was always worried about his family and friends. He was a member of the American Legion Post #60 and Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years Sharon L. Harmon; daughter Cheryl Harmon McKnight of Ellicott City, MD; son Michael Harmon of Ft. Wayne, IN; brothers Robert Harmon and his wife Carol of Traverse City, MI and Joseph Harmon and his wife Elizabeth of Boston, MA. He is also survived by his granddaughter Colleen McKnight.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at 7:00 pm at DONALDSON FUNERAL HOME, P.A. 313 Talbott Avenue, Laurel, MD 20707. Memorial donations may be made to Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, 7745 Waterloo Road, Jessup, MD 20794 or Baltimore Humane Society 1601 Nicodemus Road, Reisterstown, MD 21136.
