Robert Leroy Carr

April 23, 1928 — November 30, 2011

Robert Leroy Carr, "Bob", 83, of Laurel, MD departed this world Wednesday afternoon November 30, 2011. A resident of the Selborne House on Main Street for the last five years, he was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years Joan Louise Carr in 2007. He is also preceded by his parents Howard Anderson Carr (1st LT. Army) and Mary Miller Carr, two brothers, John Carr (WWII Army) and Richard Carr (Air Force Vet.), two sisters, Harriet Swinger (Former Marine) and Wilma Miller.
He is survived by his daughter Susan Tull of Laurel and granddaughter Jacqueline Delphin of Frederick. He is also survived by four sisters, Helen Ballog of Flushing, Ohio, Mary Breslin in Columbus, GA, Dorothy (Cookie) Uther in Norwalk, Ohio, and Joyce Woodburn, Potomac Falls, VA.
Bob was born and raised on the family dairy farm in Coshocton, Ohio, that serviced West Lafayette Ohio and the surrounding county.
In 1944, his father signed waivers for him to join the Ohio Army National Guard at 16 and later in 1946 he joined the US Army and was stationed at Fort Richardson, Alaska as a military policeman and later a firearms instructor attached to the 57th Fighter Jet Wing at Elmendorf Field. The Army life Corporal Carr loved so well was cut short when his right leg became frostbitten while moose hunting north of Fairbanks. Bob recovered at Walter Reed General Hospital and left the Army in 1949.
Bob stayed in the area for a time before he ventured out to California in 1951 where he worked clearing trails on Mount Whitney; riding his trusty horse Lobo throughout two summers and a winter season.
He later moved to Metuchen, New Jersey where he married Joan and began a career in materials management for several defense contractors including Raytheon, Honeywell and Lockheed Martin. The couple moved to Maryland to be closer to family where the two started a new career that they both loved as partners managing a self-storage business. In 2004, thanks to his positive attitude, Bob survived a usually fatal form of cancer.
Upon their retirement, Bob and Joan settled at the Selborne House on Main Street. Bob stayed busy after losing Joan. He gardened regularly at his daughter and son-in-law's home, tended to the family pets, and volunteered with Women Uplifting Women Ministries and World Vision International sending clothing to families in Liberia as well as handing out food and goods at the Selborne House.
This tall, gentle, loving man will be remembered in a celebration of life on January 28, details to follow. In lieu of flowers or donations, Bob would wish for everyone who reads this to do something kind for a fellow person.
