Robert Melvin Moe

Robert (Bob) Melvin Moe was born on November 22, 1928 in St. Petersburg, Florida to Oluf and Louise Moe. He spent his early years in St.Petersburg and graduated from St. Petersburg High School in 1946. He was known to his friends and schoolmates as “Little Moe” and “Coach.” He held numerous leadership positions and received many accolades for his service in school and in his community. He was most proud of his participation as a Green Devil on his high school football team, humbly wearing number 24 on his green and white uniform.

Robert attended Eastern Michigan University (formerly known as Michigan State Normal College) and George Washington University. He served the United States Army from 1950-1954 as an Infantry Officer with the 1st Battalion, 179th Infantry where he received the Combat Infantry Badge during the Korean Campaign, two Battle Stars and the Bronze Star Medal. Bob also received special Ambassador for Peace medals from the Republic of South Korea.

Robert married the love of his life, Barbara Ann Burley of Washington, DC, on January 16, 1954, and had four children.

Bob was a member of the American Legion Post 60 and a former member of the VFW Post 8950. He worked for the American Automobile Association (AAA) for six years, New York Life Insurance Company for three years and worked at the Washington Post for over 30 years, retiring as a Senior Advertising Manager in 1991. After retiring he became an avid golfer, playing weekly on the local senior circuit until he was 90 and a full time “Pop” to his family.

Robert is best known for his 65 years of volunteer service with organizations such as Cubscouts, PTA Presidents in Beacon Heights and Montpelier, Prince Georges Council of PTA’s (Regional Vice President), American Heart Association Dinner Chairman and President of the East Pines Citizens Association. Bob was proudest of his volunteerism as the Hospital Auxiliary President at Laurel Regional Hospital. He was widely recognized at the hospital information desk where he and his wife, Barbara, spent most Friday nights for 36 years. Robert participated in numerous civic functions, committees, and organizations where he earned the respect and the admiration of the people and the communities he served. Bob continued to be recognized in the Laurel community for his service, resilience and strength of character until his passing at the remarkable milestone age of almost 98.

His wife and best friend of 68 years, Barbara, preceded him in death in April 2022. He leaves behind his son, Stephen (Kelly MacLean), daughter, Lorie Smallets (Walter), his son, Craig and his son, Brian (Joann Starzec) as well as seven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

Visitation will be Monday, August 10, 2026 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Donaldson Funeral Home, P.A. 313 Talbott Avenue, Laurel, MD. Funeral service is Tuesday August 11, 2026 at 11a.m. at First United Methodist Church 424 Main Street, Laurel, MD.
