Royce "Sam" Lloyd

July 6, 1958 — March 5, 2025

Columbia

Royce Allen “Sam” Lloyd was a gentle and loving husband, father, granddad, and dear friend to many. After bravely battling melanoma, his spirit was received into the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for eternal rest on March 5, 2025.

Sam, as most everyone called him, was born July 6, 1958, in Edinburgh, Scotland, to Royce Albert Lloyd and Mary Alice (Robertson), of Anniston, Alabama. Sam’s father served in the United States Air Force and, during his tours of duty, was stationed on several military bases, including in Scotland and Japan (Okinawa and Misawa). This early international experience afforded young Sam the opportunity to live in several countries and grow up appreciating many diverse cultures. Sam attended grade school in Alabama, and then MacArthur Middle School. He graduated from Anne Arundel High School in 1976. The Lloyd family ultimately settled in Laurel, Maryland, when Royce was stationed at Fort Meade.

Sam worked at Kemp Mill Records (then Kemp Mill Music) from 1977 to 2013, the last 10 years as co-owner of two stores. It was their mutual love of music and recording artists that drew Sam and Pamela Poole together and they married on June 21, 1980. Sam’s work with Kemp Mill, then known as one of the major vendors at the Capital Jazz Festival, afforded the two of them many great opportunities to meet artists and musicians, and attend live performances and festivals as Sam managed teams and traveled to concerts to promote artists’ music. Both he and Pam loved many different genres of music and the musicians who performed. Over the years, Sam accumulated an unrivaled collection of music CDs.

From Sam and Pam’s June 21, 1980 union, two daughters were born, first Jessica Ami and then Chelsie Jenelle.

After leaving Kemp Mill, Sam trained and became a much-sought-after Licensed Home Inspector in Maryland and Virginia, first starting his own business, Around the House LLC, working with The Pearce Group, and most recently, A-Z Inspection Services. His home inspection acumen, pride of thoroughness, and great personality led Sam to become one of the area’s most popular home inspectors, routinely recommended by many of the local realtors working with him.

Sam and Pam pursued their faith and Christian life, serving at Oaklands Presbyterian Church, in Laurel, MD. Together, they became part of the leadership team and worked tirelessly with other members to make building improvements, increase and expand membership, organize and execute many church activities, and help chart the direction for future property use.

Once an avid runner and tennis player, Sam later developed a passion for cycling. He rode the 100-mile, nationally acclaimed biking event, the annual Sea Gull Century rides, several times, beginning and ending on the campus of Salisbury University, on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

Nothing, however, brought Sam more sheer enjoyment than spending time with his family. He loved being outdoors with his soulmate Pam - kayaking, hiking, traveling, horseback riding, feeding and learning about native Maryland birds, and touring the great Southwest US. Sam was also a huge student of history, especially the US Civil War era, and enjoyed watching hockey and rooting for the Washington Capitals.

Always the supportive father and grandfather, he loved attending Chelsie’s theatrical performances and watching his 9-year old grandson, Wesley, a very talented ice hockey player, play on the Jr. Black Bears Hockey Team. Sam also loved building things with 4-year-old grandson, Phoenix. He spent endless hours playing board and table games with his family. For both of his grandchildren, Sam was their beloved “Papa.”

Sam was predeceased by his parents, Royce and Mary Alice Lloyd. He leaves his loving and devoted wife, Pam Lloyd, to cherish his memory, along with sister Jeanne Denise Lloyd; daughters Jessi Collins (Dan) and Chelsie King (Jeremy); grandsons Wesley Collins and Phoenix King; and many other family and friends.
