Shirley N. Sausnock, a Maryland native who was a member of St. Mary’s of the Mills Catholic Church in Laurel, Md. passed away peacefully at home on 9 February. She was 88.
Shirley Norris was born in Baltimore, raised in Clinton, Md. and was a graduate of Surrattsville High School. Shirley moved to Japan in 1955 after graduation and marriage to Joseph Sausnock Jr. Shirley spent the next 30 years living abroad in Germany and Japan. She settled back in the Laurel area in 1985 where she went to work for the National Security Agency and retired after a 30+ year career.
Shirley enjoyed walking, love for animals, and her church. During her time in Japan, she volunteered with the Catholic Church helping Japanese residents living with leprosy at the base of Mt. Fuji where she met Mother Teresa. The 10 years living in Camp Zama, Japan was filled with adventure, travel, and teaching English. Her commitment to God and service to others was evident during her life. She was an avid collector of Japanese and German antiques.
Survivors include two children, Patrice Berndt of Ft. Worth, Tx. and Joe Sausnock of Houston,Tx. She leaves behind two sisters, Gloria Shadduck of Rockwall, Tx, Carolyn Webb of Takoma Park, Md. and one brother, Phillip Holmes of Baltimore, Md. Shirley had 5 grandchildren, Christopher Evans, Arron Kinkade, Corrie Kinkade, Brady Sausnock and Mitchell Sausnock. She also leaves behind 9 great grandchildren, and 1 great, great grandchild and numerous nieces, nephews and family members.
