Summit J. Lippincott

Summit was born on March 20, 1927, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and died on February 20, 2024, in Silver Spring, Maryland.

He grew up in Haddon Heights, New Jersey, and was the 3rd eldest child out of 4 siblings. He is preceded in death by his parents, Clarence Willett Lippincott and Margaret Banyard Lippincott, and siblings Benjamin Banyard Lippincott, Priscilla Lippincott Pole, Scott West Lippincott, as well as his son-in-law, Dan Raymond Sanders (Becky’s late husband).

Summit attended King’s College in Delaware where he met his future wife, Shirley Muriel Roby. After they were married on November 20, 1948, they moved to Beltsville, Maryland. They resided in Beltsville at their home at 4901 Denim Road, built with Shirley’s father, Wade Roby, for 46 years before relocating to Cherry View Park Retirement Community in Laurel, Maryland, in December 2004.

Summit is survived by his wife of 75 years, Shirley Roby Lippincott, and his two daughters, Rebecca Ann German (James), and Katy Ann Comber (Darrold); grandchildren, Jennifer Lyn Sanders (Dafe), Laura Michelle Talavera (Raul), Stuart Richard Gammage, III (Bridget), Jacklyn Kate Allison (Garrett); great-grandchildren, Alexis Danielle Sadler (Izo), Arianna Grace Brown, Colton Jarrett Kelley (Andrea), Casey Ryan Thibodeaux, Zoie Grace Brown, Isabella Capri Talavera, Brooke Cara Gammage, Cruz Michael Talavera, Hampton Wade Allison, Hayes Ryan Allison; and great-great-grandson, Blaize Smail Salibegovic.

Summit worked as an Engineering Draftsman for the Naval Surface Warfare Center in White Oak, Maryland, and retired in 1985, following 34 years of civil service.

Summit was homebound towards the end of his 96-years, due to congestive heart failure, but he remained a member with his wife at the First Baptist Church in Laurel, Maryland.

As a gardening enthusiast, he enjoyed growing vegetables and fruits of all kinds. He enjoyed spending some of his time with his eldest grandson discussing airplanes and attending a few air shows. He served as a deacon during his many years of church membership. He also handed out Gideon Bibles at local nursing homes. One of his many passions was spending time with his family.  He also picked up his grandchildren after school and brought them a snack as they discussed the day’s events with him. He was known as “Poppy” or “Pop” to his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchild, who adored him tremendously. He was a strong believer in the Lord Jesus Christ and was never ashamed to share his faith with his family and friends. Summit’s generosity, kindness, and smile are a few of his traits that will be cherished forever.
