Susan Weber Miller

August 10, 1934 — March 9, 2023

Silver Spring

Susan W. Miller, beloved daughter of the late Adolph J. Weber and Florence G. Weber and older sister to Jerome J. Weber (Vibeke) and late sister Cecilia “Cece” A. Weber, passed away on March 9, 2023 at the age of 88. She was married for 56 years to Colonel John B. Miller, Jr., USAF (Retired), who passed away in 2011. She is survived by their seven loving children: John G. Miller (Jennifer) of Camino, CA; Thomas M. Miller (Sandy) of Loulé, Portugal; Mark C. Miller (Wendy Royalty) of Ellicott City, MD; Stephen A. Miller (Marion Mönkhoff-Miller) of Zurich, Switzerland; Mary P. Miller (Barbara Whitman) of Satellite Beach, FL; Joan E. Douglas (Rick) of Jefferson, MD; and Laura M. Miller (Patrick Bedard) of Laurel, MD. She was the wonderful grandmother to 19 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Susan was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and her early childhood years were spent in Wisconsin.  Her family moved to the Washington, D.C. area in the early 1940s where they first lived in northwest Washington, Mount Rainier, MD and East Riverdale, MD, before finally settling in Berwyn Heights, MD.  She met John on a blind date in 1954 and they were married in the spring of 1955 in College Park, MD.  The newly married couple then embarked on a 30-year adventure with the US Air Force.  Their travels took them to new places across the United States and around the world, during which time they raised their seven children. They eventually settled in Laurel, MD, where Susan was a parishioner of St Mary of the Mills Catholic Church for 42 years. Susan worked 13 years in suburban Maryland for Martin Marietta, from which she retired in 1994, and continued working as a contractor for Lockheed Martin for several more years before fully retiring.   She was a lover of art and an accomplished painter, so after retirement she volunteered for many years as a docent at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington.  She also continued to travel extensively around the world, with John and with her dear friends.  She got the most joy from visiting her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren for major life events and celebrations wherever they were located, here in the United States or around the world. Susan graduated from high school with the class of 1952 at Immaculate Conception Academy in Washington, and with an Associate’s Degree in 1954 from Immaculata Junior College in Washington.  After raising her seven children, traveling the world for 30 years with John and his many military assignments, and returning to the professional work force, she went back to school and graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Trinity College in Washington, D.C. in 1991.

She sold the Laurel family home in 2018 and moved to Riderwood Village, a retirement community in Silver Spring, MD, where she spent her final years. Riderwood was the perfect place for her. She made many new friends there and was able to enjoy her interests including book clubs, playing bridge, and continuing her passion for art by learning new art forms and creating beautiful oil and water color paintings. Loving, humble, brilliant, a superb athlete with a beautiful smile, and a woman of great faith, Susan was our family’s devoted matriarch, our constant, and a wonderful friend to many.  She is dearly missed. Viewing will be held at the Donaldson Funeral Home, P.A., 313 Talbott Ave, Laurel, MD on Tuesday, March 21, 2023 from 4-8 p.m.  A funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, March 22, 2023 at 11 a.m. at St Mary of the Mills Catholic Church, 114 St Mary's Place, Laurel, MD.  Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date.
