Sylvia M. (Lancner) Johnston

Sylvia M. Johnston (Sibbie), 88 of Laurel, MD passed away July 11th, 2024 at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C. surrounded by her loving family.

Sylvia was born on March 12, 1936 in Blakely, PA to Francis and Sylvia Lancner. She attended Liberty High School where she graduated and continued on to graduate from Penn State University with a Batchelor’s Degree in Political Science. From there, she went to work at the National Security Agency where she met the love of her life and husband of over 50 years, Joseph Johnston.

Sylvia is predeceased by her husband, Joseph Johnston and her parents Francis and Sylvia Lancner.

Sylvia is survived by her children : Jeffrey Johnston (Christine Johnston), Stephanie Johnston, Joseph Johnston III, James Johnston (Collette Johnston), her grandchildren : Corey Johnston, Katelyn Johnston, Michael Johnston, Kyle Johnston, Alison Johnston, Daniel Johnston and Jillian Powell and her 2 great-grandchildren : Chelsea and Cameron Nicely.

Sylvia, affectionately known to her family and friends as “Sibbie”, was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved to do crossword puzzles, play bridge and entertain. Her biggest passion was cooking and was always trying new recipes and passing them on to her family. She continued her love for cooking and celebrating holidays with her family and friends until the very end. She and Joe loved to go camping, loved lighthouses and walking on the beach. She loved the finer things in life, but our rustic family farm in North-Eastern PA was her “Happy Place”.

Sylvia, a 2-time cancer survivor, never let her illness steal her joy. She loved to laugh, share good jokes and would always have people around that would “cut-up” with her. She will always be loved and truly missed forever.
