Vara Kumar Isaac

December 22, 1963 — April 21, 2022

Kensington, Maryland

Vara Kumar Isaac, a 30+ year-resident of Kensington, Maryland passed away in Suburban Hospital on April 21, 2022.

The youngest child of Reverend Isaac and Mrs. Deenamma Paul, Vara was born near Hyderabad, India during his parents’ ministry in a small village called Dosada.  Around 2015, Vara took the opportunity to honor his father’s spiritual legacy by visiting and contributing to a Dosada church constructed in Reverend Isaac’s name.  Vara memorialized the Telugu devotionals he heard throughout his childhood by releasing a melodious instrumental album in 1999 called ‘Dhyanam’ (Meditation), which he had the privilege of composing with A.R. Rahman’s troupe (Grammy-winning, music composer, of ‘Jai Ho’ fame).  He was a very talented, self-taught musician, and one of A.R. Rahman’s early die-hard fans.

Vara worked diligently as a chauffeur for the Indian Embassy in Washington, D.C. for 25 years.  His easy-going and professional manner earned the love of both his colleagues and the dignitaries he served. He received an award of recognition for his outstanding service from the honorable Ambassador.

Making and enjoying music, traveling, reading, and cooking/feeding his loved ones comprised Vara’s many interests.  Family and friends eagerly waited for him to make his signature biryani, a Mughlai dish which requires great skill and patience.  A kind-hearted soul, Vara often sought to help the poor and those in need, and was a great ally and support to those he cared about.

Vara is survived by his wife, Bodala Promodini, and three children, Deena, Deepa, and Deevith Isaac.  He is also survived by his older sisters and their families: Sarala Samuel Madari, Sukumari Isaacpaul, Bodala Sowbhagyam, Sukanya Karigari, Chandra Leela Adirala, Mary Nalini Chandrasekar, as well as the family of his older brother, Late Adirala Deva Prasad.

The viewing and funeral service will be held at Free Methodist Telugu Church at 1916 Bonifant Road, Silver Spring, MD 20906, on Saturday, May 7 th at 1:15 PM.  This service will be immediately followed by the burial, at Union Cemetary at 3001 Spencerville Rd, Burtonsville, MD 20866.
