Warren B. Howard

June 22, 1933 — January 28, 2018

Warren Howard, 84, passed away with his family present on January 28, 2018 after a long battle with lung cancer.  Born in Indiana on June 22, 1933 to Charles L. Howard and Mary Howard, Warren moved to Montana, Colorado, and then to the family homestead in Burrton, Kansas, where Warren graduated from Burrton High School in 1951. He earned a degree in animal husbandry at Kansas State University and took ROTC. Following college, he joined the US Army commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant and served from 1956 to 1958 while stationed in Milwaukee and Detroit. He married Barbara Frazier on October 25, 1958 and the newlyweds moved to Burrton, Kansas.

In 1962, Warren started his civil service career at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as a consumer safety officer in Kansas City, MO. He transferred to Chicago in 1963, and then continued his FDA career by moving to Philadelphia to become a drug specialist when new Federal legislation was passed. Warren took evening classes to earn a Master’s degree at Temple University in 1969. He came to the Washington DC area in 1973 to work on drug regulations at FDA headquarters in Rockville, MD. After 28 years at FDA, he retired in 1990.

Warren was an easy-going guy and a true handyman who was great at fixing things.  He built several pieces of furniture for his home. He also created beautiful intarsia carvings constructed of inlaid wood sections. His favorite intarsia subject was birds.  Warren also enjoyed travel. He and his wife took numerous trips to locations such as Alaska, Scandinavia, Iceland, Australia, New Zealand, Panama and Costa Rica.

Warren has been an active member of the United Methodist Church for his entire life.  He and his wife Barbara are long time members of Mt Zion UMC in Highland, MD, where he served on several committees. Warren has been a Stephen Minister for the past 6 years, providing high quality, one-to-one Christian care to people who are hurting.

For over 25 years, Warren has been a member of the Maryland Mayflower Society, an organization for those united by their love of history and pride in the accomplishments of the Pilgrims. He and his wife joined many of Mayflower trips and events and Warren served as Corresponding Secretary for 9 years.

In addition to his parents, Warren was preceded in death by his sister, Beverly.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Barbara Howard; son, Donald; daughter, Carol and her family; daughter, Sharon and her family; brother, Lewis Howard and his wife Ti and brother-in-law, Jim Dillman.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, February 11, 2018 at 2 pm with visitation starting at 1 pm,  at Mount Zion United Methodist Church, 12430 Scaggsville Road, Highland, MD 20777.  Additional information can be found on the website of the Donaldson Funeral Home, 313 Talbott Avenue, Laurel, MD 20707.  www.donaldsonfuneralhome.com
