Dr. William (Bill) M. Garrett, Jr., a southern gentleman, passed peacefully on December 20, 2017, in Laurel, Maryland. Bill was a loving big brother, father, and grandfather. He was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina, on November 24, 1946.  He was proceeded in death by his mother Helen Dickson Garrett (of Orangeburg S.C.) and father William Marvin Garrett, Sr. (of Laurens, S.C). Bill is survived by his three brothers Bert (Barbara), Glenn (Kay), and Sam (Brenda), as well as his wife Margaret Robins Garrett, and four children Greg (Jess), James (Lauren), Erin, and Brian (Jen). In the last two years, Bill was blessed with three granddaughters Amelia, Sophia, and Alanna.

Bill attended Spartanburg High School winning the all-American athlete award, Duke University (BS Chemistry), and graduated from Tulane Medical School with a Medical degree.  He was a veteran of the United States Navy and served in the Medical  Corps. He practiced anesthesiology and later in his career, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, before his retirement in 2008. He was an outstanding physician who provided excellent care to all his patients.

Bill had many interests, including fishing with his family, woodworking, gardening, playing chess, cards, and the stock market. He also enjoyed fixing cars, music, going to shows at the Kennedy Center, and had an infamous sweet tooth. He loved his family and was extremely proud of his four children and Meg. He loved animals especially his dogs and his stray cat the “General.” He was a man of few words but many sayings including “straighten up and fly right.”

He will be missed greatly by all of his family and friends.

Visitation for Bill will be at Donaldson Funeral Home in Laurel on Friday night December 29, from 6-8 PM and a funeral service in the Donaldson Chapel at 11 AM on Saturday December 30. Luncheon immediately following service at the Garrett house.  Internment will occur at Arlington Cemetery in the future. In honor of Bill, those desiring may donate to the Kimmel Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
