Yolanda (Sirianni) Cardamone

July 29, 1931 — November 25, 2021

Laurel

Yolanda (Sirianni) Cardamone, 90, wife of the late Michael Cardamone, died peacefully on November 25, 2021 after a brief illness. She was born on July 29, 1931, in the Calabria region of Italy. In 1947, still in her teens, she traveled alone to the United States to marry her husband, a veteran of World War II. She met him when he came back to his Italian hometown as an American soldier. The family moved often for her husband’s career as a Field Engineer. In 1965 Michael became a technical writer assigned permanently in Maryland. They established their home in Laurel, Maryland, remodeling and improving it over the years. They enjoyed 49 years together, raising a large family. When Michael died in 1996, she continued to prepare wonderful meals for her family at countless family events. She worked at local restaurants after her sons finished school. She cherished her many friends, led an active life, and truly loved her family. Besides her younger brother Mario Sirianni, she is survived by her son Philip of Vernon, Connecticut, his wife Thea, and grandson David and wife Martha who reside in San Sebastian, Spain; her son Michael and wife Lorraine of Port Tobacco, Maryland, and granddaughter Jamie, husband Josh, who reside in Vero Beach, Florida, and great-granddaughter Rebecca; her son Raf and wife Linda of  Oak Hill, Virginia, and granddaughters, Tina, Sara, and Teresa; her son John and his partner Donna Haggerty of Columbia, Maryland; her son James, his wife Ana, and granddaughter Catherina of Baltimore, Maryland; and son Stephen and his wife Darcy of Laurel, Maryland.

Yolanda was exceptionally dedicated to keeping her corner of Laurel a place of beauty. She spent countless hours keeping up her yard. So many blooming flowers. So many thriving plants. In 2016, the City of Laurel awarded her the Mayor Craig A. Moe's Golden Shovel Award. Here’s what the City said about her: “She is the latest winner for her outstanding yard. Every square inch of the property is filled with beautiful flowers, and even a few fig trees. And now she can add her golden shovel award banner—recognition for her dedication to making Laurel a beautiful place to live.” Yolanda was dedicated to her church, Saint Mary of the Mills where she was a Lay Eucharistic Minister. She was involved with the Sons of Italy, the Ladies of Charity, Elizabeth House, and the Laurel Senior Center.
