The following obituary was lovingly submitted by the family of Alfred Lanning, Sr.
Alfred Lanning, age 84, passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, at Compass Regional Hospice in Centreville, MD on the 3rd of July, 2021.
Born September 6th, 1936 to John & Mildred (McMahon) Lanning, he lived the majority of his life with his family in Laurel, MD and worked for over 30 years for Laurel Equipment Rental as a backhoe and crane operator and then as an office manager until he retired. Al was a proud member of the United States Navy from 1954 – 1958, which he always remembered fondly and described as some of the best years of his life. His fondness for his years in the Navy was reflected in his love for visiting and collecting ships and lighthouses. He also volunteered as an Honor Flight Greeter to welcome our Veterans who had come to see the Washington, D.C. memorials and honor those who served and sacrificed for our country. Al won awards for being both “Best Dad” and “Best Granddaddy” and he had mastered the art of the “Dad Joke”. No matter the type of joke, it was hard not to laugh too when he giggled so much like the Pillsbury Doughboy. Al loved spending time with his family and was very proud of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He always brought great joy to those around him and will be missed dearly by all.
Alfred Lanning is survived by Daughter, Stacy Whewell, Grandchildren, Nicole (Mike) Robinson, Kristin (James) Price, and Keith Whewell Jr., Great Grandchildren, Zander, Xavier, Claire, Olivia, and Sydney, and Brothers and Sister, Joe (Joan) Lanning, Bob (JoAnn) Lanning, and Regina Lanning. Al was preceded in death by his Wife, Shirley Lanning, Son, Eddie Lanning, and Brother, Jack Lanning.
