Constance Wilhemina Swinton, departed this earth on Sunday, May 28, 2023, at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, Montgomery County, Maryland, at the age of 92. She celebrated this most recent birthday just two days prior on May 26th. For the past three plus years, she was a resident of the active senior-living community of the Wilshire Estates located in Silver Spring.
Constance was born in New York on May 26, 1931, to the late William Henry Flynn and Theresa Alston. After the untimely death of her mother in 1936, she was sent to South Carolina to be raised there by family.
It was in South Carolina where she grew up and received her formal education. It was also in South Carolina where she would meet the love of her life, Charles Jacob Swinton, who she would later marry in 1951. That same year, the couple would decide to move from South Carolina to Washington, D.C. and soon after began to expand their family. Five children: Charles Jr., Carroll, Debra, Cheryl, and Darnell all resulted from this union. This couple remained husband and wife for 58 years, only ending when Charles Sr., preceded her passing in 2009.
Over the years, Constance was a devoted homemaker and truly enjoyed involving herself in and interacting with the numerous activities of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She took great pride and pleasure in celebrating their accomplishments and supported them throughout their lives as much as she was able.
During her time at Wilshire Estates, she always looked forward to the visits, phone calls, cards and others ways her family used to keep in touch and communicate with her. These treasured interactions always “made her day”!
She is survived by her five children: Charles Swinton Jr., Carroll Swinton, Debra Spears (Jerome), Cheryl Swinton, and Darnell Swinton (Darlene); five grandchildren: Charles III, Neki, Serita, Kireem and Raphael; eleven great grandchildren; nieces: Lonnie Gleaton, Delores Stewart, and a host of other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Constance will be missed tremendously by all of her family and friends. May the God of heavens keep her spirit in our memories and our hearts until we meet again.
