This obituary was lovingly written and submitted by the family of:
Edward Charles Urbany Jr.
February 17, 1942 – October 26, 2021
Edward Charles Urbany Jr. passed away peacefully at his residence in Columbia, Md. at the age of 79.
Born in Uniontown, Pa. in 1942, Edward was the son of the late Edward C. Urbany Sr. and Edith (Tootie) Urbany. He was the oldest of five children.
In 1963, Edward began his professional career with Marriott, where he rose to become a vice president. He later worked as a procurement officer for the United States Coast Guard and retired in 2004 after 21 years there, earning Superior Achievement and Distinguished Career Service Awards.
Edward had a passion for reading, continuous learning, and educating others. He also loved sports, particularly football. A devoted Washington Redskins fan, he could be found regularly watching televised games from the comfort of his couch. He enjoyed traveling and exploring new places with his wife and grandchildren. His grandchildren always looked forward to listening to his “history lessons” and fun facts about the places they visited. Edward traveled to almost all 50 states and various countries of the world.
But most of all, Edward loved his family. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his brothers, John William and David George Urbany. He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Karen Urbany; his children, Bridget Brungart, Edward C. Urbany III, Melissa Gott, and Julia Ward; his nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Other survivors include his brother, James Patrick Urbany; his sister, Mary Jane Joseph; and nine nieces and nephews. They will miss him more than they can express. His work ethic, intellectual curiosity, wit, imaginative stories, sense of humor, and his unwavering love and support enriched their lives immeasurably.
