Gloria Simpson was the second of three children born to Edgar and Nellie Simpson on 06 July 1927 in Philadelphia, PA. She was devoted to her older brother Edgar and younger sister Geraldine throughout their lives. She married Robert (Bob) Evans of Williamstown, PA on 07 February 1948 and enjoyed 67 years of marriage until his passing in 2015. She died on 03 October 2020 and is survived by five children (Roy Evans, Sharon Cameron, David Evans, Kathy Bielski, and Linda Corrick), 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
She attended nursing school during the latter part of World War II but was denied graduation when appendicitis and the Allied victory interrupted her studies. She worked for the AT&T Company before her marriage. The Evans family moved frequently during the 1950’s as a result of work requirements and she shepherded her growing family through Washington DC, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Florida, Indiana, Kansas, South Dakota, and Texas before settling in Maryland in 1964.
In addition to managing the Evans household and raising her children, she worked part-time for a repossession agency and the Hecht Company. She became a “second Mom” to many of her children’s friends and was a beloved Aunt to her 15 Wallace and Simpson nieces and nephews throughout her life. She also became skilled at producing ceramic Christmas villages for under the tree and made villages for all her children and grandchildren. She helped in construction of the family cabin in central PA that became a favorite refuge during her retirement years.
A viewing will be held at Donaldson Funeral Home in Laurel MD (313 Talbott Ave) from 6 to 8 pm on Monday, 12 October. Donations can be made to the American Cancer Society in lieu of flowers. A ceremony honoring her life will be held at a date to be determined next year.
