Irene Wilcox Gilbert died on September 2, 2020 at Morningside Nursing Home in Laurel, MD. Born in Philadelphia, PA, she attended St Bridget School and John W. Hallahan Catholic Girls’ High School. Her continued education included a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English and French at the College of Notre Dame of Maryland, a Master of Arts Degree in United States History and Political Science at Villanova University, PA with advanced administrative studies at Fordham University, NY, Loyola College, and Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD.
Her ministerial work with the School Sisters of Notre Dame offered her opportunities to teach at St. Ann School in Baltimore City, Holy Angels High School Academy in Fort Lee, NJ, and later, as principal, she established Villa Regina Academy in Baltimore County. She continued her teaching as Chairman of the English Department at Sudbrook Junior High School and completed her work in education as an Administrator at Perry Hall Senior High School.
As the wife of her loving and devoted husband, Roland A. Gilbert, who preceded her in death, she lived a happy and productive life in Laurel with many good friends and kind neighbors. During these years, she worked as a volunteer at Laurel Regional Hospital.
She is survived by her nephew, Stephen Newsome of PA; nephew, George Cummins of CA; and niece, Mary Lynn Smock of MI.
