Suzanne Jennifer Norton (née Young) entered eternal life on April 10, 2022 at home while surrounded by family following a prolonged battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. She was 67 years old.
Jenny is survived by her devoted husband Dave of 48 years and was the beloved mother of Mike (Annie), Matt (Mary), John (Jessie), David (Katie), Andy (Sarah), Joe (Linda-Anne), Peter (Annie), Paul (Melissa), and Mary She is also survived by 35 grandchildren, 4 siblings and her mother Susan. She was preceded in death by her brother Chris and her father Richard.
Jenny grew up in Flint, Michigan, graduating from Linden HS in 1972. She married Dave Norton in 1973 and graduated from Hurley Hospital School of Nursing in 1975. She worked as a Pediatric RN at Wake Hospital in Raleigh NC before “retiring” to raise and educate their 9 children. Gentle and magnanimous, Jenny always made time to listen to a young child, counsel a teen, encourage the worried new mom and mentor the doubtful homeschooler. Adventurous and naturally curious, she delighted in homeschooling her 9 children and never balked when Dave’s job moved their family 7 times, including living abroad for 3 years in Singapore. The quintessential homemaker, she made sure the Norton home was perfumed by nutritious, made-from-scratch meals and the aroma of freshly baked bread that she made from wheat berries she ground herself. Gracious and generous, Jenny always made room for the unexpected dinner guest(s) who was sure to leave with a satisfied belly and warm heart. Devoutly Catholic, she cherished her faith and lived the Gospel by creating a loving and faith-filled home that was centered around God, her family and the liturgical year.
Jenny would be the first to say that her greatest life achievement was that of serving as a beloved wife, mother and grandmother. However she touched the lives of hundreds if not thousands while serving as a La Leche League Leader, CCL Natural Family Planning instructor, Catholic homeschooling pioneer, home birth advocate, avid reader, hiker and Catholic role model. She will be profoundly missed by all who were fortunate to know her but her life is a testimony to our hope in the Resurrection.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to be made in her name to The Gabriel Network in Bowie MD, one of her favorite charities supporting young mothers and their babies.
