Roberta Petro Obituary

Roberta A Petro, age 91, passed away in Columbia, MD on Wednesday May 18, 2022. Born in Alberta, Canada, daughter of Joseph and Mary Chervinski, she was the youngest of thirteen children.  She married her husband George M. Petro Jr in 1955, moved to the United States and became a US citizen. They were married for 40 years.  She worked for the Prince Georges County Police Department as a Crossing Guard for 50 years retiring at age 83 in 2013.  A resident of Laurel since 1975, she worked in Laurel from 1976 until she retired, stopping traffic for school children on Rt 197 for Deerfield Elementary, Main Street and Montgomery Streets in Laurel for Laurel Elementary, in front of Scotchtown Elementary, and in front of the church for St. Mary of the Mills School.  She crossed children and handled traffic at St. Mary of the Mills from 1976 until 2013.  Mrs. Petro was a member of the Roman Catholic church.  She was a former 4-H Leader in Prince Georges County and judged crafts and foods for the 4-H Fairs in Prince Georges and Howard Counties.  She was active in local Homemakers clubs.  She was on the Prince Georges County Crossing Guard Drill Team, served as an Honor Guard, and was an Officer in the Crossing Guard Union.  She enjoyed helping out with the Christmas Parties that the Prince Georges County Police held for the children in the county.  She was an active resident at the Residences at Vantage Point in Columbia, MD and enjoyed painting ceramics, making jewelry, playing on the Wii Bowling Team, playing Rummikub and Bingo, helping the Enrichment Team, displaying her handiwork in the local craft show, and an occasional trip to the casino to play the slots.

She is survived by two daughters and their spouses, five grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and one step great-grandchild. She has numerous nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews in Canada.  She was predeceased by her husband George M. Petro Jr, her parents, and all 12 of her brothers and sisters and their spouses.

Services will be held on Thursday June 2 at St. Mary of the Mills church in Laurel, MD starting at 11 am with a short viewing, followed by the celebration of Mass at noon.  Burial will be private at Crownsville Veterans Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Howard County 4-H Foundation, Howard County 4-H Office, 3300 North Ridge Road, Ellicott City, MD 21043 attn: Sheryl Bennett or to the American Heart Association.
