Sammy Lee Holmes, Sr.

Sammy Lee Holmes, Sr., age 80, passed away in Laurel, MD on Friday, October 6, 2023.

Born August 26,1943 in Allendale, SC, Son of Barney Holmes, Sr. and Elizabeth (Morrell) Holmes.  He lived in Laurel, MD and worked as an heavy equipment operator at Commonwealth Paving until retiring in 2020. Sammy enjoyed a variety of sports from football and basketball to drag racing. He attended many of the local matches and games supporting the community. Sammy took pleasure in attending the U.S. air shows as well.

Sammy is survived by his wife, Helen, his children, Mark Trent, Rhonda Holmes, and Sammy Holmes, Jr, grandchildren Shayla Holmes, Kevin Holmes, Mya Trent, and Natalia (Nat) Holmes, sister Jeanette (Holmes) Mitchell and brother Barney Holmes, Jr. (Delores), along with 5 nieces, 2 nephews and multiple great-nieces. Sammy was preceded in death by his parents, Barney Holmes, Sr and Elizabeth (Morrell) Holmes.

Services will be held at eleven o’clock, Monday, October 16,2023 at Donaldson Funeral Home, P.A. 313 Talbott Ave. in Laurel, MD 20707. Relatives and close family friends are welcome at Longhorn in Laurel following the service.
