Victor Edgardo Chavez Gil, devoted son, brother, husband, and father, passed away unexpectedly on June 4th. Born June 26, 1966, in San Salvador, El Salvador, Victor legally emigrated to the United States in 1980 with his family. He lived on Long Island before moving to Maryland.
Vic lived life to the fullest with a positive attitude and endless supply of riddles and jokes. He loved watching Star Wars and war movies and listening to all types of music. Vic’s passion was bike riding. He participated in a 100-mile bike ride, the Five “Boro” New York City Bike Tour and met the love of his life, Joann, on a bike ride in Northern Virginia. An avid sports fan, Vic was always bragging about his beloved Giants and Yankees. He also enjoyed participating in new and different activities. As an adult, Vic learned to play the violin and had a 3rd degree black belt in karate.
Vic had a generous heart and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. One of his greatest pleasures was bonding with his daughter Tara while driving to school and activities or teaching her his famous pupusa and apple pie recipes.
Victor graduated from St. Mary’s College and worked as a government contractor sharing his mastery of Excel. For many years, Vic served his community as a lifeguard, volunteer fire fighter and EMT.
Victor is survived by his loving wife of 19 years, Joann Maguire-Chavez, and their daughter, Tara. Victor is also survived by his mother, Maria del Carmen Gil de Chavez; and siblings, Roberto Chavez, Jr., Patricia Rykert and Victor Hugo Chavez. Vic was the Funcle to many nieces and nephews. Victor is preceded in death by his father, Roberto Chavez Benavidez.
Victor will be missed by many. Please join the family to remember him at Donaldson Funeral Home, P.A. on Tuesday, June 13 between 2-4pm and 6-8pm. A funeral mass will be held Wednesday, June 14 at 11:00am at St. Mary of the Mills Catholic Church. He will be laid to rest at the St. Mary of the Mills Cemetery immediately following the funeral service. Memorial contributions may be made in Victor’s honor to the PKD Foundation.
