James Gilbert Gallemore, Captain, USN (Ret.), passed away peacefully on October 16, 2016 at his home in Silver Spring, MD. Gil was born April 18, 1923 in Honolulu, to a Navy family. He was raised in Bartow, FL, where his father took over the local newspaper and his mother was a schoolteacher. He was active in Boy Scouts and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.
Gil attended the U.S. Naval Academy, graduating in June 1944, then served in World War II combat operations in the Pacific. He married Gloria (Rusty) Sheehan of Groton, CT in 1946. They raised four red-headed children during a long Navy career including many ships and stations. He commanded USS Irex (SS-482) and USS Bushnell (AS-15).
After Navy retirement in 1974, Gil served as Registrar at Schenectady Community College, and for many years as Associate Registrar at George Mason University. Gil and Rusty enjoyed several years of cruises, tours and classes together during their retirement years. He was active in the Riderwood Village Catholic Community for the past eleven years.
Gil is survived by three children; Sheila, Bruce, and Sandy; six grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. His wife Rusty and son Dave preceded him in death.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at the Riderwood Village Chapel, Silver Spring, MD at a date to be determined, followed by interment of his ashes at Starr Burying Grounds in Groton, CT at a later date. Donations may be made in his name to SO Others Might Eat (SOME).
