Dr. Compton hired me for my first job as an RN in the NASA occupational health clinic. He allowed me to start a long career in ambulatory nursing. I had no idea of the accomplishments he achieved until I read about them here: I am not surprised. He was a a good gentle man and I remember him often.

In the late 60s I was living in Beltsville and injured my back in a fall. When I called my father in Illinois, Joseph Mallory, he immediately said he wanted to call Dick Compton, a colleague from medical school and arranged a consultation. That was my only meeting with Dr. Compton* but I still remember the regard my Father had for him and the comfort provided when I was told the injury would heal (it did). Dad died in 1988 and I remember that he would periodically drive from his home in Mattoon, Illinois to St. Louis to attend reunions. I am sure they met there from time to time and had good times remembering their early years.
As a side note, Dad also stayed in St. Louis to complete his residency and was then sent to the Pacific in late 1944. Upon return, he and my Mom (she was a nurse when they met in St. Louis) moved to Mattoon and he joined the Link Clinic where he remained until retiring about a year before his death.
*I was born in 1943 so I might very well have met Dr. Compton at that time in St. Louis.

My condolences to the whole Compton family. I did not know Dr. Dick Compton, but was a patient of Dr. Greg Compton while in Laurel. I know as a family they were a well-known part of Laurel. I know Dr. Compton's family and friends will miss him greatly.

Dick was such a bright spot in my days teaching art at Knollwood. He was the only gentleman in the class and was always making us "girls" laugh. He was always so thoughtful in asking about my life as a navy wife and my husband's career. I will miss him and knowing that he is by Elizabeth's side. My prayers of comfort go out to her and the entire family. What a wonderful life that touched so many others in a positive way.
